Giving Kids Thinking Time … even when it’s uncomfortable

All the Time They Need is a fascinating article by Ellin Oliver Keene in which she takes the reader through the process of giving a student thinking time to answer a question.

From the article: “I’ve asked her to share more thinking. She looks startled, as though she’d assumed that I’d listen to her contribution and then move on to the other students who are eager to share. Isn’t that the way it’s supposed to work? The teacher asks a question, the student shares a response, and then the teacher moves on to someone else. This has taken her by surprise.” Read the entire piece here.

This article is from another good resource for professional reading from ASCD called Educational Leadership. We receive the magazine at school, ask your principal if you can borrow a copy! Each month several articles from the magazine are also available for free on the web and are worth checking out. This month’s issue called “Talking & Listening.
